Unmothered by Black Mothers gives voice to the experiences of Black daughters, ages 25-65, who have detached from their mothers, grounded in in-depth interviews, family systems theory, cultural analysis, and biblical reflection. Not Just My Mother’s Daughter is the lived experience behind that research: the story of how Dr. Steele and her mother, Jenny, both became unmothered daughters, reconciled ten months before Jenny’s passing, and what Dr. Steele's grief has been like since.

Together, they offer the findings and the story that came before them, for daughters who want language, validation, and company on the journey.
